Do I need to take metoprolol as pre-medication for my CTCA?

Edited

If you're preparing for your CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA), you may be given Metoprolol during your appointment to lower your heart rate for clear and accurate scan results.

What is Metoprolol?

Metoprolol belongs to a class of medications known as beta-blockers. It’s commonly prescribed to lower blood pressure and heart rate, and is particularly useful during a CTCA scan to help reduce motion artefacts caused by a fast heartbeat. This leads to clearer, higher-quality imaging.

To support this effect, we also recommend that you avoid caffeine and other stimulants before your scan, and ensure you are appropriately hydrated

Who Should Not Take Metoprolol?

Metoprolol is not suitable for everyone. Do not take Metoprolol if:

  • You have moderate to severe asthma, especially if you use a daily preventer inhaler (commonly orange or purple in colour).

Possible Side Effects

Metoprolol is generally well-tolerated, but occasional side effects may include:

  • Dizziness

  • Slow heart rate

If you experience any of these symptoms or have concerns about taking this medication, please let the radiology centre know during your appointment.
