What’s involved in a CTCA scan?
A CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA) is a non-invasive imaging test that provides detailed pictures of your heart's blood vessels. It’s one of the most accurate ways to detect coronary artery disease early — even before symptoms appear.
Here’s exactly what’s involved, step-by-step:
Before the Scan: Preparation
To ensure the best image quality, follow these preparation guidelines:
No caffeine or stimulants (tea, coffee, cola, chocolate, including decaf) from the night before.
No food for 4 hours before your appointment. Water is encouraged.
Avoid Viagra, Levitra, Cialis and intense exercise for 24 hours prior.
No smoking 4 hours before the test.
Continue taking your regular medications unless advised otherwise.
Complete your CTCA Consent Form via your Everlab Dashboard before your appointment.
Note: You won’t be able to drive after the appointment, so plan accordingly.
Pre-Appointment Medication
You may be given metoprolol during your appointment to help slow your heart rate. This improves image clarity by reducing motion. Instructions will be tailored based on your morning heart rate and sent via email.
At the Clinic: What to Expect
Arrival: Check in at the clinic and let them know you’re from Everlab.
Monitoring: Your heart rate will be checked. If it’s at the desired level, you may be scanned earlier than scheduled.
Cannula Insertion: A small IV cannula will be placed in your arm for contrast dye delivery.
The Scan: You’ll lie on the CT machine table while a nurse injects contrast dye. The scan takes less than 15 minutes and is completely painless.
Aftercare: Your heart rate will be monitored post-scan to ensure it has returned to normal before you leave.
Why a CTCA?
Unlike a calcium score alone, a CTCA detects both calcified and non-calcified plaque, providing a much clearer picture of your heart health. This can guide targeted, preventive interventions before problems arise.
