Are my CGM results accurate?

Edited

To get the best results out of your Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM), it's important to understand how certain factors such as placement, preparation and external factors can influence your results.

Below are some common mistakes that can affect accuracy and data interpretation:

  1. Data interpretation

    • Don't panic if you spot one high or low number, CGMs are great for spotting blood glucose patterns so try look at the big picture

    • CGMs have a 2-15 minute lag time between actual blood sugar and sensor readings - suitable for looking at trends

  2. Incorrect sensor placement

    • sensors on muscle-heavy or fat-light areas can affect accuracy

  3. Poor skin preparation

    • cleaning the area helps with sensor adhesion

    • avoid scars, tattoos and irritated skin

  4. Incorrect calibration

    • follow device specific instructions for accurate readings

  5. External factors

    • high temperature, high altitudes, dehydration, intense exercise and stress are all external factors that could influence your blood glucose readings
