How should I prepare for my DEXA scan?

Edited

Preparing for your DEXA scan properly helps ensure accurate and reliable results. Here’s what you need to know before your appointment:

Pre-Scan Preparation

  • Fasting: Please avoid eating for 2 hours prior to your scan.
Drinking water is allowed and encouraged.

  • Clothing:
Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or underwire bras.
Avoid jewellery, as metal can interfere with the accuracy of the scan.

  • Exercise:
Refrain from intense workouts for 24 hours before your scan.
Strenuous exercise can temporarily affect bone density readings.

  • Recent Imaging:
If you’ve had a barium exam, CT scan with contrast dye, or a radioisotope scan within the past two weeks, let your technician know.
These substances may affect the scan's accuracy.
