How does a DEXA scan work?

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan is a simple, non-invasive procedure used to measure bone density and body composition.

What to Expect During the Scan

  • You’ll lie down on a specialised X-ray table. A trained radiographer will help position your body correctly—foam blocks may be used to support and align you comfortably.

  • The scan begins with a mechanical arm passing slowly over your body. This arm uses low-dose X-rays to capture detailed images of your bones and tissue composition.

  • Key areas like your hips and spine are most commonly scanned. In some cases, your forearms may also be included depending on clinical need.

How Long Does It Take?

The entire scan usually takes 10 to 25 minutes, depending on how many areas of the body are being assessed.

It’s Quick and Painless

There’s no discomfort during the scan, and you’ll be able to resume your normal activities immediately afterward.

What is the Weight Limit for DEXA?

The weight limit at Everlab is 220KG.
If the DEXA is from our Partner provider, it is best to check with them if you are over 160KG

What factors can impact DEXA Scans?

For reference there are factors that can impact on differences between DEXA scans (even if the actual composition has not changed)

  1. Different machines used can cause a small variation

  2. Calibration (set by a human doing the DEXA) can have a small impact

  3. Level of member hydration (if well hydrated will have lower fat mass, and higher lean mass. Vice versa also true)
