How accurate are DEXA scan results?
DEXA scans are considered the industry standard for measuring Bone Mineral Density (BMD).
However, results can sometimes differ from those provided by other providers. Variations in results may be due to:
Machine variation: Results can vary between different DEXA machines or manufacturers. Each machine may have slightly different calibration or technology.
Technician variability: How the technician positions your body can affect results. Even slight differences in positioning between scans can lead to measurement variations.
Scan location: Bone density varies throughout the body. Scans of different areas (spine, hip, forearm) will naturally show different results.
Different testing methods: If you've had other types of bone density tests (such as quantitative ultrasound or QCT scans), these use different technologies and will produce different numerical results than DEXA.
Natural biological changes: Bone density naturally changes over time due to aging, medication use, lifestyle changes, or health conditions.
Osteoarthritis or calcification: These conditions can artificially inflate BMD readings, particularly in the spine, making results appear better than they actually are.
